Style & Comfort Shoes FTW

Becoming a mom has made me think of the evolution of my personal style in terms of before v. after baby. Then I subcategorize into pants, tops, bras, etc. Becoming a mother has changed me in many ways, and honestly, I can’t complain about a single one of them because they are all positive. Right down to my larger hips. It suits me, what can I say? #Loveyoself, ladies! Today, though, we are talking shoes.

Before baby, I was all for the extra high heels, the pointy, the arch-less, the support-less. It was style before comfort 100%. It just didn’t seem possible to have it all, at least not without a lot of effort. Though here I am, after baby, to tell you my friends that you can have it all!

Born. Yes, I know these babies are crazy expensive. Friends! I have a work-around! Ever heard of 6pm.com? This is the most bad-ass place to get all your favorite stuff for less. I get my born shoes here all the time. Born shoes have great heel and arch support and provide both the everyday comfort and style you need to rock through your day. My latest purchase are these Born Reid>> booties, retail price $150, but I purchased for $68. One important fact about 6pm is that sale prices fluctuate all the time on each item. You need to strike while the iron is hot!

Naturalizer. Yes, another expensive shoe brand. We are talking quality people! You shouldn’t skimp on your footwear. Trust me. These are another 6pm.com WIN! My last purchase of Naturalizers were the Naturalizer Eden 3>>, retail price $89 but I purchased for $31. Again, these super cute shoes have extra special cushioning in the footbed as well as arch support.

Sofft. Now, I have to be honest. I do not yet own a pair of Sofft shoes but I do have my eye set on several pairs. I came across this brand when I was searching for wedges to wear to my sister’s engagement party last summer. A nice man at Nordstrom brought a pair of Sofft wedge sandals out for me to try on and my life hasn’t been the same since. This was in June last year and I am still thinking about the soft footbed that felt like walking on a pillow and the soft leather straps of the sandal that I knew would never betray me by digging into my foot. I didn’t buy them at the time because they didn’t match my dress, but I found them on (you guessed it) 6pm.com and I plan to purchase!

Check out these brands if you are looking to achieve style, comfort and support in your footwear. It can be done! Some other brands I’d like to also recommend are Ugg Australia, Roxy and Clarks. Check out 6pm.com for deals and steals!

Blow Dry Faster!

I have to post this follow up to my Thick, Fine hair… a blessing and a curse>> post. I have discovered a brush for blow drying that rocks my world.

My hair stylist was blow drying my hair one fine day. I noticed my hair was drying much faster than usual. Since this never happens, I had to ask. What is this magical brush? Turned out to be a Wet Brush paddle brush for blow drying. This baby can withstand the heat of a professional blow dryer and has a vented back, dramatically reducing blow dry time! BOOM!

As you already know, Wet Brush brushes are my very favorite. I was super excited to learn of this Wet Brush for blow drying. Check this bad boy out here>>.

Happy Drying!

Hey There. It's Nico.

First I want to say Happy New Year! Thank you for reading my blog! I thought it would be fun to share ten facts about moi. If you can relate to any of them I would love to hear from you! Solidarity!

  • My husband is a musician and we met at one of his gigs in 2008. My mother introduced us.
  • I have 5 sisters. 3 Stepsisters and 2 biological sisters.
  • I have terrible night terrors almost every night. The only thing that has helped is completely cutting caffeine out of my diet AND listening to a meditation before I got to bed called, “I am safe.”
  • I am 50% Greek and the other 50% is a mixture, but mostly Scandinavian.
  • My obsession with true crime has led me to my favorite podcast: My Favorite Murder>>.
  • I have a taxidermy tarantula that I got in Santa Fe, NM as a child. I named him Spud and he has been with me for 25 years and countless moves, despite my arachnophobia and frequent night terrors about spiders.
  • My husband and I went to the same high school, but he is 11.5 years older. In fact, he graduated high school with my 8th grade social studies teacher.
  • My biological sisters and I all have different colored hair…to the extreme. I am a strawberry blonde, my middle sister is a dark brunette, and my youngest sister has dark red, curly hair.
  • I have a Mini Australian Shepherd named Babyface Finnster (Finn) who was named after Baby Face Finster from Looney Tunes.
  • When I had my son, I brought my own hospital gown for the occasion. Purchased from Motherhood Maternity>>, looks like a nice comfy black dress with hidden snaps. It’s all about style, am I right?

End of a Decade

The time between Christmas and New Years always seems like the strangest time of year to me. Especially, this year. We are approaching the end of a decade and entering an entirely new one. Pretty exciting stuff, but what does this mean for making New Years resolutions? Go all out and make some “decade” resolutions along side the year 2020 resolutions? I’m thinking why not? Where do I see myself in 10 years? What are my short term goals for 2020 and where do I want to be in 10 years? Ponder that.

I’m going to share with you my favorite New Years Eve tradition that my husband and I have. Each year, we both take small pieces of paper and write one resolution per piece. As many as we want! We put them in a small tin box and tuck it away for the year. Then the next time New Years Eve rolls around, we read the resolutions from the year before, discuss them, and give ourselves a pat on the back for the ones we accomplished. It’s fun to do this together. As a married couple, I also appreciate it in the way it gives us to connect on what our goals are year after year and see that we are still on a path that brings us together. Maybe indulge in a little New Years champagne in front of the fire while we’re at it.

I want to thank you for reading and most importantly wish you a very Happy and Healthy New Year! May all your resolutions become reality!

10 Holiday Traditions

Now that I am a mother, I find myself getting very sentimental about holiday traditions. I love the traditions my mother established for my sisters and I, and I want to do the same for my son. Here are a few of the traditions I got goin’ on right now.

  • Setting up and decorating the tree at the beginning of December while listening to Christmas music.
  • Opening pajamas on Christmas Eve with the family, accompanied by several photos of jammie time.
  • Opening an ornament on Christmas Eve.
  • My husband making a delicious beef stew on Christmas Eve.
  • Opening stockings Christmas morning while enjoying coffee and/or a mimosa, followed by the rest of them presents!
  • Having a delicious brunch after presents on Christmas Day.
  • Dressing up in our Ugly Christmas Sweaters for the remainder of Christmas Day and celebrations with extended family.
  • There are always fun holiday headbands to wear once the party starts and/or the Santa hats.
  • When visiting my mother in Philly we do a White Elephant gift exchange with the extended family which is super fun!
  • When visiting my mother in Philly there is always a dance party at some point during the festivities. Always.

I would love to add more! I grew up with all girls, so my question to you is this: What holiday traditions do boys like? What can I add for my son who is 18 months old? Please share your ideas and the traditions that you love and hold dear!

Happy Holidays everyone!

Holiday Shopping Hot Spot

This year I have done the majority of my holiday shopping online. It all started with my son getting a cough, then pink eye, then a fever, then some vomiting and a little bit of croup. Needless to say, the whole household caught a cold and we have been cooped up here since the 2nd of December. Since I have family out of state, I try to get my shopping done early because I need time to wrap and ship the presents. What I want to share with you today is a retailer that I had forgotten about until my son needed some cold weather pants a few months back and I found myself here: Macy’s.

Macy’s isn’t a place that had readily popped into my mind in years, and possibly ever. I have rediscovered Macy’s and I am down with this department store. Macy’s has awesome sales pretty regularly and literally has something for everyone. Shopping for your husband? Macy’s has men’s watches, jewelry, ties, clothes, gadgets, etc. Shopping for your toddler? Macy’s has toys and clothes for toddlers! Score! Shopping for Mom or Grandma? Macy’s has quality slippers! Haha. They carry Free People, which if you read my blog you know I LOVE Free People. All priced pretty reasonably especially with their constant sales.

Macy’s has a Gift Ideas section on their site which is incredibly useful. You can shop their stocking stuffers (so helpful), you can shop for “last minute” gifts, you can filter it by who you are shopping for, or by price, or by type. They even have a White Elephant gift option. Check it out here>>. You can have the products shipped directly to you or pick up at your local store.

If you find yourself stumped on a gift, Macy’s just might have the answer. Happy Shopping!

Hair Hacks

  • When you shower, try to put the shampoo only on the roots of your hair and give yourself a nice scalp massage while you’re at it. Leave the shampoo off the ends of your hair because it can actually dry it out!
  • Likewise, when you shower, put the conditioner only on the ends of your hair. Conditioner is like lotion for your hair and you really don’t need it on the roots as this can make your hair oily faster.
  • On the day you shower, once your hair is dry, use your dry shampoo!!! Using the dry shampoo right away as a preventative will keep your hair fresher longer. Whereas, using the dry shampoo after your hair is already greasy can only do so much…
  • Caster oil is GREAT for your hair. The benefits of caster oil include: moisturizing the scalp, easing dandruff, and leaving your hair smooth and shiny. Also, if you apply caster oil to your scalp it is said to enhance the health of the hair follicles and promote hair growth/prevent hair loss. Caster oil is thick, so how do you apply it? For me, the easiest way is mixing it in with my shampoo and conditioner once a week.
